Sugarloaf helps launch Environmental Education Foundation

As a result of Sugarloaf's legal intervention in the Mirant power plant expansion (as reported in the 2004 newsletter) SCA has secured a number of commitments by Mirant. Most importantly, Mirant has agreed to clean up all three existing coal plants to reduce NOx emissions. Another important commitment by Mirant is the provision of financial support for the formation of the Piedmont Environmental Education Foundation which will sponsor environmental education projects in the schools. Annual grants will be awarded to teachers in the school systems of Montgomery and Frederick counties and the District of Columbia to conduct such projects. A request for non-profit status of the Foundation [501(c)(3)] has been made and Sugarloaf hopes to issue the first call for project proposals in time to make awards for the fall '05 school year.
