Why Worry about Recycling Garbage
Here are the Smelly Details:

The measured recycling rate in Montgomery County has been dropping ever since the incinerator became fully operational in 1996.

The growing tonnage of stuff that could be recycled- but isn’t has overwhelmed the incinerator, and the burnable material is going to landfills.

Recycling rates have stagnated at 29.2% for non-residential and at 11% for multi-family dwellings.

In April 2002, Montgomery County staff warned that at current rates, we will run out of waste disposal capacity within 5 years. Which do you want- a landfill, a huge incinerator expansion, or an aggressive recycling program?

Sugarloaf Citizens Association and our allies have been raising concerns about the county’s faltering recycling program for several years. The county isn’t paying much attention to this smelly stuff, do you want to bring it to their attention?
