Global Ecology Magnet Program at Poolesville High School

The Global Ecology House headed by Joyce Bailey invited Sugarloaf Citizens Association to participate again in the annual Global Ecology Senior Project Poster Session on Friday, May 20th, 2011. Several members of SCA enjoyed a stimulating morning reviewing these wonderful projects and talking with the individual students about their research, stewardship or teaching.

As you are likely aware, the Global Ecology House provides students with the knowledge and understanding of the scientific, cultural, social, political, economic, and technological conditions that affect the quality of life on our planet. This is a field-based program which involves an interdisciplinary approach to the study of environmental issues with major emphasis on science and social studies. Students are challenged to develop a global ecological perspective as they investigate historical and current issues related to the earth’s natural resources.

All seniors in the program are required to complete a hands-on environment-related project prior to graduation. On Friday, May 20 each senior was available to explain and discuss the details and results of his or her project. Although all the projects were worthy, our organization wanted to recognize projects that are complementary to our mission.

The Bethesda Chevy Chase Chapter of the Izaak Walton League hosted a formal awards ceremony in their beautiful chapter house near Poolesville on Monday, May 23rd, 2011. S.C.A. was delighted to honor the following students for their wonderful accomplishments with their Global Ecology Projects.
