Local Farm Project
by Josh Ballard
| The Global Ecology magnet program at Poolesville High School educates students about the scientific, cultural, political, and economic conditions that affect the quality of life on earth. It is an interdisciplinary approach to the study of environmental issues. All seniors in the program must design and successfully complete a capstone project prior to graduation. Joshua Ballard, who was born and raised in the Agriculture Reserve, realized that despite having grown up in sight of farms, and even though he’d regularly driven past rows of crops and fields of livestock for all his school years, he had no idea what actually happened on a farm. He set out to interview farmers, so he could better understand what local agriculture was all about, and to photograph them at work, so that he could create a media project—a slide show, narrated and set to music-- that would teach others about what he had learned. Sugarloaf Citizens Association sponsored this project and we are pleased to post it for your enjoyment. |
