Barnesville Oaks

The Barnesville Oaks fight is now over. SCA and MCA combined resources to legally fight this project and were unsuccessful. SCA is grateful to the Sugarloaf community for all the wonderful letters written in opposition to this huge clustering project. Residents went even further attending a five hour hearing on July 22nd that ended at 12:30 a.m. Everyone should feel very good about the fight against Barnesville Oaks even though we failed to find a legal or political way to prevent this tragedy.

The developers have decided not to appeal the final approved plan of Park and Planning. The final plan allows for 24 residences to be built in a cluster style along Peach Tree Road. The developers wanted the dwelling, farm tenant mobile home and guest house and other tenant houses to be included for a total permitted density of 33 residential structures on the property. A total of 780 acres will be left in farm land and 85 per cent of the forest area will be put into permanent forest conservation. At the SCA 2011 annual meeting, Francoise Carrier stated that the Barnesville Oaks challenge will not come up again as there are no similar large parcels left in the Agriculture Reserve.
