Montgomery County’s Waste Overhaul Plans Possibly in Limbo

Montgomery County’s plans to overhaul its waste management systems may have suddenly been thrown into limbo—after a year of positive momentum. The overhaul is one of the biggest items on the County Council’s agenda in 2026.

The Council’s current president, Natali Fani-Gonzalez, has suggested in recent weeks she may hold up a vote on transitioning from burning much of the County’s garbage to landfilling it—until County Executive Marc Elrich and the County’s Department of EnvironmentalProtection (DEP) come up with a more elaborate plan to lower the volume of waste first.

We oppose any delay in closing the County’s aging and polluting trash incinerator. Reducing the County’s waste can be done even as we transition to landfill. We urge you to tell the Council President, your Council member—or all 11 Council members—that a delay is unacceptable. Below is a link to the Councilmember contact page.
