1. Sugarloaf Mountain. As most of you likely know Stronghold reopened the mountain on October 10. It had been closed for almost 2 months. New security measures are in place. A few of those seem warranted. Others—not so much. In our view, closure of the parking lot at the base of the mountain and a year-round 4pm closure of the mountain’s main gate were completely unnecessary measures. Both place unwarranted restrictions on the public’s access to the mountain. We will push for these measures to be reversed. 2. New Zoning for the 3,400-acre mountain and 16,300 acres to the east. The Frederick County Planning Commission has approved a conservation-oriented zoning plan for this area, much of it adjacent to Montgomery County’s Ag Reserve. The move comes after a year of delay. The plan now goes to the Frederick County Council for consideration and a vote. We support the plan and will advocate for it. Notably, Stronghold, Inc. opposes the plan and refused the invite of Frederick County authorities to engage in discussions about it.
