Potomac Edison, a subsidiary of the power company FirstEnergy, is proposing upgrades to an 18-mile section of transmission lines in Frederick and Montgomery counties. A public information session on the proposed project will take place on Wednesday June 11, 6 to 8pm at the Upper Montgomery County Volunteer Fire Department in Beallsville. As planned, the high-energy lines will go through western Montgomery County below Adamstown and cross into Virginia, largely to connect with power data centers there. This is not the Maryland Piedmont Reliability Project (MPRP) expansion that cuts across 70 miles of Maryland and terminates near Adamstown. But it is related. Opposition to MPRP is widespread in Frederick and Carroll Counties. The new proposal estimates construction costs in Maryland at $422 million; rates will rise to pay for it. Potomac Edison is also holding individual and small group conference calls on the project over the next 60 days.
