We're excited to share the latest news on Montgomery County's commitment to a greener future! This month, the county launched a new phase in its initiative to reduce food waste by encouraging businesses and residents to compost instead of throwing food scraps in the trash. Did You know? Food scraps make up about one-quarter of the county’s trash volume. In 2023 alone, an estimated 90,000 tons of food waste were incinerated in Dickerson. By increasing composting efforts, Montgomery County aims to turn food scraps into nutrient-rich compost instead of waste, benefiting our environment and community. What’s Changing? The county is expanding its composting program to allow residents to recycle food scraps at the curbside, just like glass, plastic, and paper. Once collected, these scraps will be transformed at a central composting facility, turning waste into valuable soil additives. This exciting initiative will bring curbside food scrap recycling to households across the county.
