About Sugarloaf Citizens Association
Sugarloaf Citizens Association (SCA) is a nonprofit organization of volunteers founded in 1973. Our primary mission is to preserve and protect the Agricultural Reserve - the 93,000 acres of northern Montgomery County zoned in the 1980s for farming, land conservation, and open space. We also advocate for sound environmental stewardship and climate change policies in the Ag Reserve and for the county as a whole—for the benefit of all residents.
Our headquarters at Linden Farm on more than 150 acres in Dickerson, Maryland, is home to SCA’s regenerative agriculture pilot program.
More than 50 Years of Advocacy & Education
With community support, SCA has won legal battles that strengthen the right of citizens to petition the state to challenge the environmental impact of large-scale energy and trash projects.
Key achievements include:
Working closely to monitor and advocate on behalf of the Ag Reserve on the proposed Data Center project in Dickerson and across the County
Urged Montgomery County to limit the Dickerson incinerator to only accept waste from within the County. We continue our work with the County to reinvent its trash management program, with a primary aim being shuttering the incinerator for good
Hosted Montgomery County Executive Candidate Forums for both Democratic and Republican candidates to ensure that Ag Reserve issues were front and center
Successfully advocated for the closure of the Dickerson coal-fired power plant
Led the fight to defeat a Potomac River bridge into the Ag Reserve because of concerns about the bridge’s negative environmental impact
